Last week (19–23 Jan) I was in charge of the @1000LivesPlus Twitter account, tasked with sharing My Working Week with followers as part of something new we are trying on Twitter. The aim of the week was to give some insight into my role as National Primary Care Manager for 1000 Lives Improvement, to share perspectives on that work with the hope of creating better ongoing connections and collaborative working – no pressure then!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I was handed the login details on Monday morning. My particular week was chosen because of the primary care conference arranged by 1000 Lives Improvement during that week, at which we were joined by NHS Wales leadership teams discussing the Welsh Government Plan for Primary Care where lots of great discussions would be taking place.
I wanted to use the week as an opportunity to highlight the importance of primary care as it is often a topic that sits in the shadows of what’s going on in hospitals. I posted a mixture of links to work currently being undertaken within 1000 Lives Improvement, as well as questions to start a discussion. My busiest day came with live-tweeting from the primary care conference held in Cardiff on the Thursday using the hashtag #PH1000Lives.It was great to be able to share the key points from the conference with others who couldn’t be there.
So, what did I learn from tweeting My Working Week?
Being a regular on Twitter for a few years now, I wasn’t expecting my week to be much different from how I regularly use the platform to engage with fellow colleagues, but in fact it was quite different. In a nutshell: it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but I’m glad that I did it. While at some points it was difficult when no-one answered questions I had hoped would elicit more of a response, I really enjoyed the discussions that did occur when colleagues engaged and it was also nice to engage with a wider variety of colleagues than I usually would through my own Twitter account.
One of the highlights was being able to acknowledge some of the fantastic work being done here by my colleagues in areas like falls, safety and patient engagement. It has also made me think about how we can use social media more to help people engage with the many programmes and events we are involved in. There is great potential here for us to reach out to a much wider audience than is able to attend physically on the day.

These are just my views. I’m keen to know if people following the week found it interesting or useful. I’m looking forward to seeing what my fellow colleagues within 1000 Lives Improvement and beyond can contribute to My Working Week, and what new things I will learn by following along, I’d encourage you to do the same. I’d even like to see colleagues from outside 1000 Lives have a go so we can all gain insight into each other’s roles.
