Wow, what a sense of achievement! On February 5 2015, I was handed my certificate for the completion of my Improving Quality Together (IQT) Silver project. Yes I am one of those 10,291 participants who’ve done the IQT Bronze award, completing it a couple of years ago and I’ve now been able to go that extra step forward by completing my IQT Silver.

 

So what was my project?

As the title of this blog suggests, the aim was to increase the number of times student nurses contributed to ‘academic’ online discussions. I have an interest in e-learning and the reason I chose this topic area was to explore how the use of technology can further enhance teaching and learning.

During the recent International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare, I facilitated a specialty poster focus group themed on record keeping. It was thought-provoking to hear different views on the latest ways to combat the everyday issues of ineffective record keeping.

Throughout the tour, the delegates heard a range of ideas, from the small and simple, to the more ambitious and innovative. The overarching message from each passionate presenter was the same, though; we need to make things work better for the benefit of the patient. What was clear is that this issue is still problematic, and not specific to one profession alone.

Student nurses are best placed to be able to influence the delivery of a quality based health service and promote a ‘can do’ culture. I have confidence in saying this, as when the students start their career as a student nurse they have a genuine curiosity to find out why care is delivered in the way that it is.

‘Put the patients first’ said Robert Francis QC at the Quality Forum, in London. Students are taught to do this early on in the curriculum from a theoretical and clinical perspective – to support this observation 1000 Lives Plus promotes a person centred care approach which is central to all module sessions taught in Glyndŵr University.
