After our big news last week that 1000 Lives Improvement will become Improvement Cymru on 25 November 2019 – we catch up with Dr John Boulton, now the permanent Director of 1000 Lives Improvement/Improvement Cymru to find out more.

Why rebrand 1000 Lives Improvement to Improvement Cymru?

I first became aware of 1000 Lives Improvement when I was working as a physician in Sheffield over a decade ago. It’s a well-respected and established brand. Since the 1000 Lives patient safety campaign 11 years ago it has been synonymous with improving patient safety across Wales. But that’s exactly why we need to change and evolve our brand. The Parliamentary Review and A Healthier Wales both suggested that we needed to consider how we support improvement within health care as well as begin to work with social care organisations. So, although patient safety will remain very important to improvement work in Wales, we must now offer an improvement service to support the wide range of challenges facing both health and social care. We need a brand to reflect this and Improvement Cymru fits the bill – it’s short, simple and self-explanatory.

What is different about Improvement Cymru?

As Improvement Cymru we will be even more focussed on  working collaboratively with our partners in Wales and beyond. For us it’s not about Improvement Cymru, it’s about Improvement – promoting and enabling improvement as a vehicle for transformation to achieve great care for the people of Wales. We are already working to support organisations to embed a culture of improvement and we want to elevate this further, and unite everyone to develop a new shared ‘Vision for Improvement’ for health and social care in Wales that we can all work together to achieve.

What does the change to Improvement Cymru mean for improvement in Wales?

If all health and social care organisations across Wales are working together to achieve the same ‘Vision for Improvement’, this will mean more and more people across Wales will experience and receive consistently great care. Our staff in health and social care are so important and valued and we want to support them by offering them improvement training and coaching – that’s why we are establishing the Improvement Cymru Academy. So when they see something that could be made better for the people they are caring for, they have the skills and confidence to improve it. We hope that this will give them an even bigger sense of achievement, to be able to sit on their sofa at the end of a busy day knowing that they and made something better and delivered great care. This is what we want for our staff and the people of Wales.

How will the 1000 Lives Improvement Programmes change?

You won’t notice any immediate changes to our programmes as we rebrand to Improvement Cymru. Over time, however, we will be reviewing all of our programmes of work, ensuring that they reflect the new approach.

What’s next for Improvement Cymru?

Over the next few months the  team will be engaging with people across health and social care, working with our colleagues and partners to develop a new shared ‘Vision for Improvement’ for health and social care in Wales. We’ll be exhibiting at a range of partner events to do this, starting at the Social Care Wales conference this week. If you don’t catch us at an event you’ll be able to engage with us online.

The next big milestone for us will be our conference on 25 and 26 November. This is when we’ll relaunch as Improvement Cymru and share the new ‘Vision for Improvement’ for health and social care in Wales. Dr John Boulton, Interim Director of NHS Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, 1000 Lives Improvement

It’s been a busy few months since I joined Public Health Wales in the summer – although I’m not complaining! When I first arrived, I was also part time in my role as Executive Director of Continuous Improvement in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and so was effectively wearing two hats. Now, a few months in to the full time role, I continue to be astounded by the volume of work going on and commitment of the team within 1000 Lives Improvement.

The last several months really has been a journey of discovery and information gathering and I have met many stakeholder groups in order  to gain an in depth understanding of an organisation that’s already in its tenth year – I’m hearing some really great things.

In going through that journey, however, there is a clear recognition that the 1000 Lives team need to evolve the way that they support Quality Improvement within Wales. I think 2019 is going to be an exciting time for 1000 Lives Improvement. We are looking at what we do and how we do it to enable us to support NHS Wales and Social Care to improve services and achieve the vision set out in Welsh Government’s A Healthier Wales: our Plan for Health and Social Care (2018).

Responding to The Parliamentary Review of Health and Social Care in Wales (2018), the plan sets out a long-term future vision of a ‘whole system approach to health and social care’, which is focussed on health and wellbeing, and on preventing illness. It calls for transformation to an integrated system, with new models of seamless local health and social care and we’re developing plans around how we can support you to deliver this transformation. The 1000 Lives team is well placed to support this.

Pan gyrhaeddais i am y tro cyntaf, roeddwn i hefyd yn gweithio’n rhan-amser yn fy swydd fel Cyfarwyddwr Gweithredol Gwella Parhaus ym Mwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Aneurin Bevan, ac felly roeddwn i’n gwisgo dwy het mewn gwirionedd. Bellach, ychydig fisoedd ar ôl dechrau’r rôl amser llawn, rwy’n parhau i gael fy synnu gan faint o waith sy’n cael ei wneud ac ymroddiad tîm Gwasanaeth Gwella 1000 o Fywydau.

Yn ystod y daith honno, fodd bynnag, cafwyd cydnabyddiaeth gref bod angen i’r tîm 1000 o Fywydau ddatblygu’r ffordd y maen nhw’n cefnogi Gwella Ansawdd yng Nghymru. The last week of August in my diary had been packed to the rafters with meetings for a while. When asked to additionally host My Working Week I thought it was a good idea and I could use it to share my activities with a new audience. Best laid plans!

I was determined to fly the nursing flag, I’m very proud of my profession.

As my husband nicknamed me ‘Twitter HQ’ that week perhaps that’s a true reflection of what he saw: a laptop, iPad, diary, determination…and a smile.

A few months on, here’s some reflections from Tim Heywood on the impact Twitter can and has had on an event like the 1000 Lives Improvement National Learning Event.

At the most recent 1000 Lives Improvement National Learning Event, Paul Harris from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board explained how his team had been working to improve the experience of oral surgery for people with learning difficulties.

His team created have created the idea of  a ‘SPA’ Day (Soothing Patient’s Anxiety). They focus on the person’s fears and anxiety, and to try find out enough about their individual interests to find unique ways to bring an element of fun into the process.

For those of us who were at the event, it was great to hear the passionate way Paul spoke about his work, but there were only about 300 people in the room. It was the way in which people in the room responded on Twitter that made a massive difference to the wider impact and created new opportunities to connect health professionals.

Massive response

We always encourage people who attend the National Learning Events to join in on Twitter, but it is rare to receive such a strong response to one talk. Paul spoke for about five minutes and generated an incredible number of mentions from people who were inspired and enthused by his work.

Paul wasn’t on Twitter at the start of the day, but the 1000 Lives Communications Team quickly helped him to set up with an account so he could start responding to what people were saying.

As the Twitter response spread, the Chief Executive of his organisation (who had not been at the event) was brought into the conversation and the profile of his work was raised within his own organisation as well as to the wider network of health professionals across Wales and beyond viewing it on Twitter.

The response to Paul and his team on Twitter is a great example of how social media can help support, promote and spread simple innovation and excellent practice across the healthcare community.

Recently, I had the opportunity to take control of the @1000LivesPlus Twitter account and share my working week with followers of the account.

When I was initially asked to do this by our communications team, I have to admit I wondered ‘why me?’. Having only recently been introduced to Twitter and following some embarrassing gaffs tweeting at the International Quality Forum in April (such as sending a blank tweet and needing to send two to finish off a sentence) I thought they were asking me by mistake!

It would seem there was a method on their madness.

Last week, a 1000 Lives Improvement master class looked at using ‘annual quality statements’ as a way of supporting improvement and celebrating the successes of NHS Wales organisations and its staff.

Since 2013 every NHS Wales organisation has been required to produce an Annual Quality Statement (AQS). This year the Welsh Government has produced the NHS Wales AQS covering the whole country for the first time.

The AQS is important because it presents information for the public  and patients about services in NHS Wales in an accessible, easy-to-read format. It’s easy to get bogged down in data and statistics, and if figures are presented without any context then it’s hard to know if they represent good performance or whether urgent improvement is needed.

In the wake of the Francis Report in England and Trusted to Care here in Wales, getting improvement and patient safety messages across to all healthcare staff is essential.

We need to communicate these both as national priorities and within individual health organisations. But doing it is a challenge.

Exploring the role of communications in quality improvement is a new paper from colleagues who were involved in the 1000 Lives Campaign. It describes the importance of large campaigns (in this case, a national campaign) and a framework for communications to support those initiatives.

Wow, what a sense of achievement! On February 5 2015, I was handed my certificate for the completion of my Improving Quality Together (IQT) Silver project. Yes I am one of those 10,291 participants who’ve done the IQT Bronze award, completing it a couple of years ago and I’ve now been able to go that extra step forward by completing my IQT Silver.

 

So what was my project?

As the title of this blog suggests, the aim was to increase the number of times student nurses contributed to ‘academic’ online discussions. I have an interest in e-learning and the reason I chose this topic area was to explore how the use of technology can further enhance teaching and learning.

Last week (2 – 6 Feb) I took control of the @1000LivesPlus Twitter account to share My Working Week with followers, following in the footsteps of my colleague Paul Gimson.

I’ve been using Twitter for a few years now and I have fallen in and out of love with it, however, I was excited to see what a busy week ahead would bring, as well as having an opportunity to share and profile different aspects of my work to a new group of people, highlighting some of the work my colleagues do along the way. I also wanted to get people thinking – and perhaps even testing – some small changes that can have a positive impact on the experience of our service users across NHS Wales.
